As the JIRA turns...

Ok, as promised, this time you get to hear a personal Char soap box spiel, followed by a JIRA.

Before I start, though, I would like to say that this is completely private opinion. I don't expect residents to immediately change anything about what they do personally in relation to anything expressed here. I don't expect SL residents as a whole to change their ways. In fact, that's what the JIRA is all about, to give everyone else a way to continue on as desired while giving me the freedom to not only grin and ignore it but to just not see it. Freedom for everyone!

First scenario: Poofers, the nice little particle spewers that happen when you teleport in somewhere and poof out happy little butterflies or other cutesy things, have been around since I was a newb. I have to admit to even trying really hard at one time to find one I could stand more than the first two times I saw it because, well, everyone else had them so they must be cool, right? I got over it fast. Now I fall strongly in the category of 'isn't there a way to just not see them without losing cool particle effects in the waterfall over that way?'

Second scenario: 'Face Lights'. The worn attachments to properly light your face so that there aren't any odd shadows marring your face and ruining the look of your makeup and skin. These cropped up around the time Windlight first appeared as an optional viewer and have just kept on multiplying. I've sort of gotten used to the discrete ones, though I had a hard time not photographing everyone during the one really bad viewer update when the invisiprims were viewable from many angles as not invisilble and dropping the photograph on their profile. I did resist.

However, that's when I learned, to my horror, that there's at least one version out there with more than one lighted prim to them. The reason this is sort of horrifying is that SL only renders the six closest light sources. When you're walking around a region that has nice light effects and you're wearing some facelight that whether you know it or not uses FOUR of them, that's pretty rude to the creators of the lovely region around you and just plain greedy. Of course, I'd venture a guess that most don't know that only six light sources render at a time, much less that they are wearing four and not one. I refuse to theorize on what percentage of the group even care. Then there are the face lights that just aren't discrete. At least one version out there has to be set to max radius of 20m with no fall-off. Its blinding and leaves even the ground beneath the avatar's feet over saturated and certainly not how anything should be viewed. It makes the details on the avatar impossible to make out, especially on lighter clothing. Honestly, I haven't looked past the sheer brightness of it all to see what it does to the face in question... most likely not the desired reaction.

Done ranting.

In my travels, I happened to overhear someone mention a third party viewer that has the option to disable attached avatar lights and also attached particles. Needless to say given the above, I lit up like an overdressed Christmas Tree and promptly went to the JIRA to see if anyone had a request out for this to be included in the main viewer! Which brings us back on topic.

Not only is it out there, there is a fix pending. There is also a patch but apparently its the type of thing where you need to be some level of uber-geekette that I haven't achieved yet, possibly including something called 'recompiling' of the client. Ok, I'm not so desperate for the fix as to risk fatally breaking my SL install so I'll have to bounce around and wait for it to hit the release candidate or full release client.

Vote your conscience, as always. If you think this is a great way to give all of us what we want (the ability to wear our facelights and our poofers and enjoy sl our way, and others to just turn off seeing them as desired) then vote for it! Otherwise, ignore it and go on your merry way. I promise, I don't take notes about who votes for any of this.

Hugs!

More about JIRA...

So, during the Q&A tonight... (ok, by now in my sleepless night its really last night since it officially qualifies as morning though it definitely feels like middle of the night) ... I realized in chatting with Dylon and the others present about the monstrous mess that is JIRA, that I probably hadn't adequately stressed the real reason to care one way or the other about dealing with the monstrosity.

The JIRA gives us a chance to have a voice.

The entries are read, they are acted upon. Not always in the way we'd like, and sometimes with a maddening efficiency to shut down duplicates... always in favor of the oldest and not necessarily the best worded or most voted upon.

Which brings up my last post. In that post, I introduced a JIRA written by a long time SL acquaintance. I think its important that the search work in some manner that approximates expected behavior. They closed it in favor of an older entry... with only two votes compared to the 37 that had collected... grrrr.

So here's the new (ok the old) JIRA to vote on in lieu of the original: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8371

Stay tuned for the next installment of As The JIRA Turns... in which Charlene reveals personal pet peeves, a JIRA to vote on (one that has a fix-pending!!!) and a way to patch in the meantime...

Search Listings and a Jira to vote for....

Back a ways they fixed search so that while it would find Hat in a listing that included Hats as a keyword, it would not find 'Pear' in a listing that included the words 'spear' or 'pearl'. This appears to have broken again... at least in the classifieds tab and the classifieds column on the All tab, but possibly further than that in other tabs, as well.

Please wander by the JIRA for this issue and vote your conscience.

Security Systems and SkyBeam

Ok, I wrote this whole long thing about the needs of the community but it sounded a bit like a lawyer wrote it so I'm trying again. If I lapse into hoity toity, please forgive me

As we've grown from just a place to live and into a rather sprawling continent with a growing sense of community, new issues continually present themselves. One currently on the table for me is the concept of 'airspace' with relation to flying around and enjoying the scenery throughout the regions. Ok, I don't take time much to simply relax and enjoy such activities, but I have done the hot air balloon thing a time or two and it really is a pleasant and relaxing way to explore.

The problem is that security systems are in use and not all have settings that are particularly friendly for our aerial explorers. This is especially true for anyone who doesn't have the most robust personal computer and can't set their draw distance very high. If they have to fly up 96 to 100m above the ground they may well lose site of the ground, all navigational references and the scenery they are there to explore. Further, for slower moving vehicles crossing over larger parcels, the 30 seconds or so warning they are given may not be enough for them to get out of range before being ejected... often without their vehicle.

This leaves me considering the drastic notion of following in the footsteps of the very successful and popular community of Caledon and disallowing both ban lines (disallowed in any event) and security devices below skybox level. This would surely be a highly unpopular measure.

In combination, we have to be aware of how our systems affect the waterways and sidewalks around our properties. A badly configured and programmed system can extend into unexpected places. Scepterd Isle is a particularly difficult situation where sidewalks are stretched across the edges of resident parcels and only anchored on group land.

So, where do es this leave us? A whole new set of security system rules.

The current relevant section from the covenant:

"- Security systems are allowed. They must give at least a 15 second warning to vacate before ejecting a person or teleporting them home. If your lot has a path along its border, please be certain that those traveling the public path(s) will not be within range of your security system. The sim owner and designated estate manager(s) must be excluded from the security system defenses so that we may always be able to assist in times of griefer attacks or other harassment situations. Please request a list of these persons. "

New rules:

1) A 30 second warning will be required prior to ejection.

2) The height of the security system's range must not exceed 20m above the roofline of one's building (under most circumstances this is 24m above ground level on the residential regions, certain exceptions apply).

3) The security system must not warn or eject anyone who is traversing a public waterway or pathway and care should be taken to avoid ejecting on *apparent* public waterways (for example if you've sunk a corner of your parcel)

Ok, but how do you know if the height is right or the water or path nearby is going to be effected?

Allow me to introduce Star Security. Created by one of our own residents, this system has a visual particle test system that allows you to finally see what your security orb does and doesn’t protect. Need a 20m max clearance over you roof? No problem, set a couple of ten meter prims out (or one 20m megaprim) and adjust the range until it clears it by that much! And even if your radius is set wider than your parcel, its effects will never interfere with those passing by. Folks on regions like Scepterd Isle where the sidewalks are technically stretched across the edges of their parcels or in the woods where they may have excavated waterways along an edge or corner of their parcel will need to be cognizant that their system needs to allow for folks to pass un-annoyed in those areas.

Ok, I know I sound like a commercial now, but I really need this to solve the above stated problems without doing really drastic things like not allowing security systems below 550m.

And, I feel strongly enough about this to put my money where my mouth is: I am buying each resident their first system. Additional units can be purchased from vendors at the estate office on SkyBeam Estates (ok, right now it’s a grassy rose shaped lump in the water with the master regional map on it, but it will be the estate office, I promise) and on Scepterd Star.

Covenant revision to follow with the above parameters and requiring the Star Security system as our only security system for the region within 24 hours. The usual ten day period to accept the changes as per covenant apply.

Please feel free to contact me at your convenience with any questions or comments.

Water slide!!!

I was out troubleshooting a small issue on Sede di Marte, when I noticed we have a water slide!

Apparently, Seraphina needed some summer fun over on SkyBeam Silver Sea and has put out a wonderfully fun water slide! You can find it at: http://slurl.com/secondlife/SkyBeam%20Silver%20Sea/189/224/21.

For those who don't know Seraphina Pinion, she is the resident owner of the SkyBeam Silver Sea open space region which is home to her wing store 'Pinion Feathers'.

Thanks for a few moments of fun in the midst of my daily madness, Seraphina!

SkyBeam Sandbox Resident Only Platforms

Okay, its been far too long and I deeply apologize for it, but the security systems should now be set correctly above SkyBeam Sandbox for resident only access. The system is ridiculously easy to use, so don't blame the creator, just the user! LOL

One of our residents and one of our non-resident community members tested the system and it worked as expected in each testing configuration.

Please let me know if you have any issues!!!

Summer Meltdown Sale!

The Summer Meltdown Sale is in effect!

Its the slow season for land sales, there is an SL-wide land glut and I simply have too much land for sale! All of this has caused me to have a personal meltdown and I'm taking buy-in prices across the estate with me!

All properties across the region are or will be marked at 4/m2 for double prim land and 2/m2 for single prim land, including the first weekly tier payment, and resident referrals will pay 20% of the buy in instead of 10%!

This is the lowest cost of admission has ever been to be a part of our wonderful community! Make sure everyone you know that might be interested knows about this sale!

Regions with available properties:

SkyBeam Pastures
Scepterd Isle
Apparition Wood (one 1024, one 2048, one 4096)
SkyBeam Everglades (two 2048 parcels, can support an additional 512 more)
SkyBeam Wood (one 1024)
SkyBeam Trailridge #1
SkyBeam Tradewaters (2048 and 1536 sized parcels)

Cheers!
